Yoh
He seems like your average high school kid, but behind his laid-back appearance, he holds an amazing secret. He is a Shaman, one of a chosen few who can communicate with ghosts and spirits. He dreams of becoming the next Shaman King in the grand Shaman King tournament. His weapon of choice is a katana sword named Sword of Light and his spiritual guide is Amidamaru.
Amidamaru
A legendary samurai who died over 600 years ago. After his grave was destroyed he teamed up with Yoh Asakura to defend his final resting place and to defeat the Ryu, who had destroyed him.
Anna Kyoyama
She’s an Itako, a special kind of Shaman who can call spirits from heaven to banish evil spirits. However, unlike Yoh, she doesn't get possessed by spirits. She is also Yoh’s fiancé and trainer for the Shaman fights.
Eliza Faust
The deceased wife Faust VIII's. When she appears as a spirit, she starts out as a red-eyed skeleton armed with a long, axe-like blade. However, she does not merge with him, but rather attacks when ordered to. In order to have a full body she must be filled with furiyoku, but only has the movements of a zombie; never blinking, talking, or reacting.
En Tao
This unique Shamen is the uncle of Jun and Ren Tao. He can transform from a normal sized man into a gigantic figure by filling himself with his ancestors' furiyoku. He loves his niece and nephew very much, but teaches them not to trust anyone. He can also talk through and control other spirits and zombies as well as create new jiang-shis by combining spirits with corpses.
Trey Racer (Horo Horo)
This pro snowborder and Shaman, merges with the spirit Kororo, an Ainu, using the Oversoul technique. He wants to win the Shaman tournament to help the Ainu by planting a whole field of coltsfoot plants in the north. He spends many gruelling hours training with his sister Pirika on a regular basis.
Jun Tao
Jun is a Dao-Shi, a person who can control zombies using paper seals. She's also the older sister of Len Tao, who is trying for the title of Shaman King. She wants Yoh’s spirit, Amidamaru, for herself, but finds that her attempts to claim him are no match for Yoh.
Len Tao
A Shaman from China who’s been condemned as a devil and banished from the Forbidden City. He was raised to see the worst in people and to punish the world for what it did to the Tao clan. But when Yoh and his friends show Len the good nature of people, he begins to slowly change his mind. With his new outlook he intends to be Shaman King and restore his family's name and honour. Len's guardian ghost is a Chinese warlord named Bason, and his weapon of choice is a Kwan-Dao (looks similar to a spear), which he fuses Bason into during battles.
Mortimer Manta
is a young student who becomes Yoh’s closest friend and ally. He joins Yoh on his journey to become Shaman King in hopes to learn everything he can about Shamans. And even though he’s small, and doesn’t possess Shaman abilities when he meets his new friend, he has a secret that is only revealed close to the end of the series.
