Season 1

Season 1

1 - Role Play
In "The World," a massive online game, players go about their business. Mimiru, a happy teenage-age girl, meets a moody player called Tsukasa. Their first meeting doesn't go well, and he leaves, saying he wants to be left alone. When he opens a treasure chest, a voice tells him that they will be together forever. When he tries to log out of the game, he can't. He's stuck. And he's wanted by the Crimson Knights for his association with a suspect cat player character. He finds himself cornered by the Silver Knight and suddenly…he is saved.

2 - Guardian
Others in The World are starting to notice Tsukasa. Mimiru and Bear seem concerned about him. Subaru, leader of the Crimson Knights, is concerned about the threat he poses, especially since the Silver Knight is nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, a player killer named Sora has an encounter with BT. Tsukasa summons Mimiru, who goes to see him with Bear. He explains that everything will be all right, because he has this new power. Mimiru argues with him, saying that it's not all right, since the player of the Crimson Knight is now hospitalized after the battle with Tsukasa. And when Mimiru chases after Tsukasa, the monster attacks…

3 - Folklore
The Silver Knight returns. Bear and BT discuss the enigma of how Tsukasa can move around without using the Chaos Gates. Sora, meanwhile, goes to the Crimson Knights to tell them he has information about Tsukasa. In the forest, the voice tells Tsukasa to imbue the sleeping girl with his own color, but he is confused by her meaning. Once again, Tsukasa calls Mimiru, but she sends Bear in her place.

4 - Wanted
Others are starting to notice Tsukasa's actions, and the Silver Knight demands action or the Crimson Knights will become a laughingstock. The voice, meanwhile, tells Tsukasa that he and the sleeping girl and she (the voice) can live happily, peacefully and not be bothered by anyone. It leads him to believe that she is the voice of his dead mother. BT and Mimiru meet with Sora, but when he has no new information, BT departs.

5 - Captured
The legendary Crim returns, after having been away for some time. After a random encounter with Tsukasa, who runs away from him, he goes to see Subaru, but the meeting is awkward and unfulfilling. Meanwhile, the others are hatching a plan to lure Tsukasa into a trap. Mimiru unknowingly serves as the bait by giving Tsukasa information about another player who has a Guardian. This information is false, and at the location the Crimson Knights are ready to capture him.

6 - Encounter
Mimiru is furious with BT for giving her false information, but BT is unconcerned. Meanwhile, Subaru tries to talk to Tsukasa, and he does open up to her somewhat. The beginning of a friendship is forming. Outside, Sora attacks the guards and breaks his way in, breaking Tsukasa out of his prison. Tsukasa chooses to go and as they escape, they are intercepted by Crim. He and Sora engage in battle while Tsukasa runs. Mimiru pulls him aside and, as if to attempt to make up for what happens earlier, tells him to just go. When Sora returns, he is not happy that she let Tsukasa escape.

7 - Reason
Mimiru decides that she's has enough of Tsukasa, so she's just going to give up on him. Bear tells her that's fine, but that she should think it through before she decides. Mimiru wanders off and meets up with a newbie player, A-20. When A-20 asks her to form a party with her, Mimiru reluctantly agrees, and they go to a dungeon in Carmina Gadelica (a very difficult level). During their battles, it becomes apparent that A-20 lied about her level and abilities; irritated, Mimiru leaves.

8 - Promise
Mimiru sends Tsukasa a message and decides to wait until she gets a response, so she sits in a field, waiting for him to show up. Meanwhile, BT meets first with Subaru and then with Crim. She discusses the Key of the Twilight with Crim, and he seems interested in searching for it with her. Sora finds Mimiru and tells her she's being stupid about how she's handling this. The voice of Morganna says that Tsukasa suspects nothing and all is proceeding according to plan.

9 - Epitaph
BT and Crim continue their plans for the search for the Key of the Twilight. Tsukasa is asked by a girl to take care of her Grunty for the next several days, as she will be out of town and unable to log in to The World. He reluctantly agrees. The rest of the group starts to uncover the pieces of the Key of the Twilight mystery and they are told to ask a hacker named Helba. The Grunty in Tsukasa's care has fallen ill, and he journeys into the snowy mountains to find the special fruit it needs to heal.

10 - Compensation
Tsukasa finds Bear arguing with another Wavemaster. Bear and Tsukasa talk, and Bear suggests he do something with his time instead of just wandering around. Irritated, Tsukasa storms off. Bear later asks Mimiru to apologize if she sees him, but she refuses, saying it's his problem and he should deal with it. Tsukasa goes to see Subaru, but the Silver Knight turns him away. Crim and BT start to understand the true purpose of the Key of the Twilight.

11 - Party
Mimiru, Bear, and Tsukasa form a party and participate in an organized event to receive a special prize. The event seems to bring them closer together, as they use their knowledge answer riddles and win the prize. BT manipulates Sora into going after Tsukasa. When a monster attacks the party, Bear and Mimiru fight but, Tsukasa refuses to help, saying it's not his problem. In the Real World, a doctor asks a parent if they want to turn off the life support. The parent says yes.

12 - Entanglement
In the real world, doctor and parent continue to discuss the fate of a child in a vegetative state, with the doctor urging him to wait and see. In The World, Tsukasa and Mimiru discuss whether he can sleep. Subaru leaves instructions that if anyone calls for her, she is to be advised immediately. Tsukasa is assaulted by Macha (the cat creature) and returns to Morganna, who chastises him for being gone). Meanwhile, Bear is convinced that the child he saw in a coma at the hospital is Tsukasa. Bear and Mimiru invite Tsukasa to join them in their search for the Key of the Twilight.

13 - Twilight Eye
Each of the groups pursues the mystery of the Key of the Twilight. Bear and Mimiru discuss the situation with the Silver Knight and assure him that they only want to set things right in "The World." Meanwhile, Crim, who is working with BT, reports on their progress to Subaru. Meanwhile, Tsukasa's plans to look for the Key of Twilight have upset the force that has up until now protected him, and Tsukasa finds that Macha, the cat-creature that once befriended him, has now turned against him.

14 - Castle
Crim and BT are transported to a strange field where everything is upside down. They set off in pursuit of the sender of the message, the "he." They reason that he's in the treasure room of the castle, but first they have to deal with Sora, who's followed them there. Meanwhile, Tsukasa arrives and he uses his power to warp himself, Bear, and Mimiru to the location specified in the message. Bear and the others find a strange man floating in a room, repeating the same phrases over and over "I just wanted to give our love tangible form…" "Protect her…"

15 - Evidence
Flashback episode, recapping events from the previous 14 episodes, from Tsukasa and Mimiru's first meeting and ending with the last scene of episode 14 where Tsukasa is hit by his Guardian. However, this time, as he is hit, there is a cut to Subaru, who suddenly cries out his name.

16 - Depth
Everyone but Tsukasa is returned to the real world. The path to the secret upside-down castle is now closed forever. They argue amongst themelves, and some assume that BT actually has the Key of the Twilight, but she does not. Meanwhile, Tsukasa awakens in the field with the floating girl. But this time, he's tied down. The disembodied voice of Morganna repeats her previous message about protecting him, but this time there is a sinister edge to it.

17 - Conflict
Mimiru tries to discuss Tsukasa's situation with BT and Bear. Bear is still interested, but BT is very cold and unfeeling and says she has to meet someone. She meets with Crim, and says she wants to talk to him offline. He tells her that while he thinks she's a good partner, he has no intention of ever meeting her in the real world. Disappointed, BT then goes to answer a call from Subaru. During their conversation, BT tells her off and walks away, refusing to even hear her request.

18 - Declaration
Subaru learns that the Silver Knight has not been delivering her messages and has been telling people she is unavailable. They have an argument about the true role of the Crimson Knights and her role as leader. She leaves and meets with Bear and Mimiru, who sympathize with her. Crim offers to help in any way that he can. In the end, the feud between Silver Knight and Subaru becomes a no-holds-barred screaming match. Subaru, fed up with constantly having to endure this, makes one final declaration as the leader of the Crimson Knights-she disbands them.

19 - Recollection
Two players see Subaru walking by, but one tells the other that that's a "fake" Subaru, since she has lots of imitators, and that since the real Subaru disbanded the Crimson Knights, she's not around much anymore. Subaru, hearing this, thinks back to the time when she first met Crim-he rescued her from some other players and coached her in the ways of "The World." Back in the present, one of the Crimson Knights begs Subaru to come back, but she refuses.

20 - Tempest
Mimiru comments that since their search for the Key of the Twilight, they've all become distant. Subaru doesn't log on much, neither does BT. Bear remarks that they were never really close in the first place. Sora baits the Silver Knight about the player killer he's hunting, and then enlists BT's help to use him as a pawn later on.

21 - Despair
Tsukasa is missing. And now both groups are dead in the water in their search for the Key of the Twilight. Subaru searches for Tsukasa, with little regard for her own health. Meanwhile, Bear discovers that the man they saw in the upside-down dungeon was Harald Hoerwick, the creator of "The World." They realize that he is a key to solving this mystery, and if he was the programmer for the game, there are probably other instances of him hiding in the World.

22 - Phantom
With some new information about Harald and a possible location, the group is ready to go, but BT hasn't arrived. They decide they have to go without her. Sora, meanwhile, convinces the Silver Knight that if he defeats the unkillable monster, he'll be a legend. During the fight, Sora bails. Meanwhile, a gate made by Helba appears, and the group goes through it to find Harald, but when they try to speak with him, he says the same things over and over.

23 - The Eve
Helba offers the group a strategic base for what will be their assault on this new omnipotent entity. Before that, each member of the group must decide if this is a fight they want to participate in or not, since the odds are not good. In turn, each person gives his or her reasons for participating, but in the end, they all choose to go. Tsukasa isn't sure he's up to it, and in an attempt to encourage him, Crim tells him Subaru's secret.

24 - Net Slum
After going through the gate, the group arrives in a strange place made of cobbled-together half-images and ghostly data fragments. Helba appears and welcomes them to "Net Slum," a place where she has gathered undeleted data fragments, old program remnants, and undiscovered bugs. It is invisible to the system administration and presumably to the enemy as well.

25 - Catastrophe
The group returns to Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground. The showdown begins. A monster is sent to attack the party, which has split into two groups. Meanwhile, Morganna has dispatched Sora, who winds up battling Crim outside the castle walls. Tsukasa joins the battle, fully committing himself to the group. He tells Subaru to run, that they will meet outside in the real world. The battle rages on. Subaru, Mimiru, and Tsukasa try to escape, but they are captured by Morganna.

26 - Return
Tsukasa wanders around, searching for Subaru; when he finds her, she says that he is a burden and wishes that they'd never met. Dejected, Tsukasa walks off. Meanwhile, both Subaru and Mimiru are also visited by doppelgangers of the other characters who say similar things to them. They realize this and are finally reunited, only to find themselves face-to-face with the sleeping girl Aura.

27 - Intermezzo
A glimpse into Mimiru's past is revealed as she and Bear adventure into a dungeon that contains a supposedly "unbeatable" monster. But Mimiru knows the secret to beating it because she's seen it done some time ago. And she's there to find something very special.

28 - Reunion
The danger has passed, and life in The World has returned to what it should be. After all the traumatic events of the past, a reunion is called and one by one, everyone shows up for Helba's big party.
