Heavenly Sword has a great story and breathtaking graphics but lacks a little on gameplay.

Let’s see…going to fight loads of evil armies…what to wear….what to wear – aha! Yes! The dress made out of ribbons – provides adequate armor protection as well as high fashion. Of course, having a double-bladed sword that occasionally can swing around on a chain isn’t too bad either. The sword allows me to hack through enemies without too much difficulty. And this is more or less sums up the game play in Heavenly Sword. But I think that the game story is definitely where it’s at!
If you like mashing buttons and can guide the sixaxis controller well, this is the game for you! Though some of the missions vary in difficulty, there aren’t many complex attack codes to remember, just mash those attack buttons, occasionally grab the left trigger to watch the sword fly around on the chain and sometimes press the circle button for a rather wicked finishing move.
Nariko – the main character - has three attack stances that have a sequence of buttons but they’re not hard to remember. It’s all about style in this game and once you’ve earned enough style points, you get access to super style attacks.
You play Nariko – an outcast who was thought to be the one to fulfill the prophecy around the Heavenly Sword. Nariko’s clan guards the Heavenly Sword – which can grant great power to whoever uses it but also sucks the life right out of you too! Dangerous stuff for sure. Of course, the evil King Bohan wants the sword for himself so he launches an attack on Nariko’s clan and you must protect them!
Yes you are their only hope! You would think at this point that Nariko might tie her hair back a little more tightly and put on some armor. She doesn’t need it judging by the reach of the Heavenly Sword however.
Phew – so there’s the story and it’s told beautifully might I add through the cut scenes and on-going movie that accompanies the game. The story is where this game really shines – it’s captivating, believable (well, for a fantasy game anyway) and well acted. I was actually impatient to get through some of the fighting so that I could see more of the story.
Your missions start off fairly easy and then increase in difficulty as you go. The boss fights are okay but not really that crazy.
For variety, the game creators have added a secondary character – Kai – your sort of adopted sister – to help you defeat the armies of King Bohan. Sometimes you get play Kai and she fights using a kind of crossbow/arrow shooting thingy. This allows you to hold down the trigger and follow along with the arrow using the sixaxis control. Sometimes your enemy is super far away but you can get him with your deadly aim and the sixaxis! It’s actually a lot of fun, though it was hard for me at first – it definitely gets better with lots of practice.
Overall this game is beautiful to look at and has a fun story but can feel a little repetitive after a while and is a tad on the short side.
