So we asked the GPs - "what would your perfect gaming system be? Describe it! And, it can totally defy the laws of physics and time. Here's what they had to say:
gp_pirate: Side note: if a game system were to defy the laws of time, I’d like to be able to play for hours but never lose a minute of my day to play!
(not that gaming is a waste of time… ask my guild!)
gp_MrSock: Ever watch Reboot? It would be great to play games where instead of controlling a super-powered plumber, I am the super-powered plumber. My ideal console makes me feel like I'm actually running around inside the game world, and when I pick things up, Ii can actually feel them. When I stomp on evil mushrooms, I can feel them squishing between my toes. But I have to be able to hear my real friends in my real living room while I'm playing, and if Ii hit Pause, the whole game world disappears and I'm standing in front of my couch.
Come on, Stephen Hawking! I know you can do it!
gp_gamepad: How about a real-time space strategy game where you control fleets of human ships battling against an insectoid alien race, and then, when you finally destroy their home planet in a brilliant, desperate maneuver, it’s revealed that it was never actually a game at all!!!
Wait, I’m thinking of something else…
gp_stratego: Obviously I would love a Star Trek-style holodeck to play my games in. The possibilities are endless with such a device. The downside is that I’ve played so many games that require you to jump or run, I would get so tired playing them it wouldn’t be much fun. Well, it would be the most intense fun I’ve ever had while I had the strength to keep playing.
gp_markergreen: Give me a game system where I actually learn new skills and get some exercise, then I can play virtual baseball anytime I like without having to get a team together or virtual hockey and I don’t have to buy new equipment. I’d love to actually learn how to play guitar in Guitar Hero 3.
gp_stratego: Let’s lose the physical controls all together and get a brainwave hookup. I’ve always felt a little restricted in real time strategy games by the interface. I know I have to build certain armies at a certain time. I’m thinking it, so just do it - fighting games too. I’m thinking fireball, uh-oh, he’s going for the jump attack – duck!
gp_MrSock: They had something like that at the Game Developer's Conference this year. You actually wore this thing on your head and controlled virtual stuff with your mind - high tech. But what if you're playing a fighting game and your phone rings in the real world, and then you start thinking "phone," and just when you're trying to make your character release a fireball, he starts talking on the phone instead, and you get beat up by your opponent? Huh?? What about THAT?
