Who here thinks that Dubbing and Editing mostly ruins the original anime show? Honestly there have been countless anime's who've been ripped apart severely by many dubbing companies. They ALWAYS hire the WORST voice actors to EVER walk the Earth.
So...share your thoughts on this topic.
And please do not post biased stuff like "but liek subtiltes sux lol" because that is just plain stupid.

Aren't you acting a bit bias?
But anyways, the only anime that have been "ripped apart" were ones done by 4Kids (Shaman King, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, Tokyo Mew Mew). Card Captor Sakura, though not dubbed by 4Kids, is equally as bad.
Do you know how hard it is to try to match voices in two different languages? These companies try their best, but it seems no matter how hard they try, there will always be people saying "omg japanese are waaayy bettar!@!"

Okay...I'm going to try to do this calmly.
To say that a dub sucks actually hurts alot of people. Namely the VA's who are doing their best to give us well-dubbed anime. I have actually seen a good majority of anime, the english voices I think are perfect.
Yes, there are a few animes that have been killed, I will not deny that. But now that I look at it, it's a small percentage. Here's some well dubbed anime:
Ruoruni Kenshin: I cannot imagine better voices for Saitou or Sano.
Gundam Seed: I think this was well dubbed. And plus, we got a rather unedited version compared to what the States ended up with.
Editing is meant to censor some things, namely excess blood and violence that we get enough from in the movies. (There is no doubt is my mind that in the Dubbed GSD, the fate of Shinn's parents will be edited...I personally don't have a problem with it...it's pretty graphic) I'm glad that they edited out the excess blood in Naruto. However...9 times out ten 10, the editing by no means takes away from the drama. (Blood isn't needed to display a death...you can do it on a stage no problem)
I personally think that there is nothing wrong with dubbing and editing. It's the only way we'll get anime on TV...I can gaurantee you that. Want the original stuff on TV, start saving for Japan.

(Bah, guess I have to retype it again)
Anyway.
I apologize for my blind discrimination about this topic.
And I do agree with you on the most part. But the dubbing in it is not that good since they don't show enough emotion (If you watch episode 19 of Naruto, Naruto barely quivers in his voice while teary-eyed).
However, the anime that is shown at Bionix is for Teen Audiences and I think most teens can handle the stuff that was edited out of said anime.
And really. If children like 8-12 can stay up to 9:30 I think there might be something a bit off there.

Dubs are no good. If you can't read subtitles, then you shouldn't be watching the anime.
The only good dub I've seen was Cowboy Bebop, and possibly Evangelion. And those are barely even standable.
Why ruin such a good thing, if you can help it, by just adding in captions. It's not hard to do, it probably costs way less money then getting voice actors. I mean, Dattebayo, and many other fansubs do it easily!
Jeeze.. Why do americans have to ruin everything --;

I agree with elvin..completely :P They do the best job they can, except 4Kids which still isnt up-to-date on the decision that... "WE DONT NEED TO MAKE ALL ANIME FOR KIDS!" *cough* sorry about that, I wish I could use the language I did on the other post to disregard 4Kids, but thats the best i can do here =D However, ADV, Pioneer, FuNi, Viz, have all gotten in on the fact that... hey wow... Anime doesnt have to be for kids! Editing is just there to match television standards. Apparently Canadians are more benefited, as our shows are minimally edited compared to those in the US, except the precut ones like Naruto, which have a strong base anyway...

I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH A PERSON SAID: I'm glad that they edited out the excess blood in Naruto.
That just makes me a little angry about that...but hey, that's your opinion T_T;; it just ruins the fun out of it anyways...and I just wished they wouldn't try to dubb everything, you know. Just give us the show with nice subtitles...no changes ^^ That will be great! But no, they just ruined it..>> it would save their trouble for looking for best voice actors and editing and all that if they just don't change anything but only with english subtitle.

Ok, I totally agree with you. I find it really irritating how they take AMAZING anime and then dub it. Yeah, I know they're trying to give more variety in the shows here in North America, but honestly, sometimes they just take things out that aren't necessary! Such as the intro songs, and some parts of the show...I'm not saying they should keep all the violence and blood in it, but there are some scenes that aren't even bad or anything, and they're taken out.
Not only that, but sometimes I feel the dubbers/companies aren't doing as well as they could.
Also, most anime is on at 11. If you think about it, lots of kids don't stay up that late, and not only that but don't you think that 13 year olds can handle stuff like that? Now in society, there are SO many videos, movies, and songs that have SO much profanity in it!
*sigh*
Well...I think the anime isn't as GREAT as it could be, but I guess we'll have to deal with it =P

only good thing about the dubbed shows is that they USUALLY include (in adition to the uncut version) the "Japaneese audio track + subtitles" on the DVDs. Otherwise I'd rather download and watch fansubs... I fear how the english voice actors for Mai HiME are going to be.... I hope they do well.

Ayamaru_ninga: What I meant by excess blood...those mindless scenes in Naruto when all you see a splash of blood appearing on the screen when a generic character dies. Not needed, for a main character maybe, but not a generic character. Trust me on this, you can have alot of drama without alot of blood.

Weird how suddenly alot of people just post suddenly even though this post has been out for....a week now?
Anyway...CalamityGuardian...you are lucky. My parents won't let me stay up after 12:30 now at Fri. And they didn't even let me stay up ti'll 10:00 at fridays when I was 11.
Lucky people being able to do such things.
Stupid parents for restricting my fun time.
[/offtopic]
Anyway. 4Kids should stop messing things up.
I still go by my ways of that most of the edited stuff in Naruto and such should be in Naruto.
Because we all know that most kids are not really that "innocent" as most would believe.
You know who you are.

You can't really generalize on this topic because the circumstances for edited shows on YTV are all different. In the case of Naruto, there is an uncut version, but Viz only allowed YTV access to the version edited to US television standards, likely because they want to force people to buy the uncut version on DVD. I have no doubt that YTV could air the show uncut at its current timeslot, or even earlier.
Now the other anime are a slightly different situation, since the Bionix block has a different staff who doesn't seem to be aware of the content that's allowed on the rest of the station. The edits they made to Gundam SEED were completely and utterly unnecessary simply because YTV has aired far more severe content in the past and has encountered no problems. (ie: Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Edits are NOT required to air the show at its current timeslot, and using the new disclaimer that cites "violence" seems to be a tactic used to prevent edits, but again, they just seem to be making edits for the sake of making edits rather than out of necessessity.
The situation is a lot worse with Ghost in the Shell simply because the show is intended for AN ADULT AUDIENCE ONLY, and while there have only been 2 or 3 small edits made, the edits are still essentially dumbing the show down for children since there's no actual policy dictating what they can and can't show. There shouldn't be either, but the Bionix staff really needs to get their act together. Especially with Ghost in the Shell because skipping episode 10 was just plain irresponsible on their part.
I strongly suggest that you guys don't sit down and take the pointless edits made by the Bionix staff. I strongly recommend that all of you send e-mails to info@ytv.com and tell them that you're dissatisfied with this practice and that as long as they use proper disclaimers, there should be absolutely no need for it.

I don't know about most people; but I don't usually check these boards more than a couple of times a week.... due to our posts being checked, usually I miss verry little over the course of a week - so... I may tend to resond to topics that may be up to a week or two old.
Also - it's not as if the topic hasn't been responded to in over a week - there were people were consistantly posting here over the course of the week. in message boards this is what we call an "active topic"

I think that Naruto was well dubbed. Naruto's voice I think is okay atleast. I haven't heard Shikamaru's voice yet. I think Gaara's is fine as long as when he goes psycho the voice matches it. It sounded too calm when he was using his chakra, very silently, and attached himself to the tree branch...
