They should never band books! I do agree thoug that there should be limits on certain books that are rated r or something like that. But banning books because it talks about one's opion is really low.

The government doesn't want us to read things that would potentially teach our generation to analyze the problems in our world, such as censorship.

Guys, does it really matter that this topic is 5 years old? Really!?
Hmm. Wouldn't the topic on "banning books" depend on what book people want to ban? Some books are good, some might have bad content, etc.

Well, I don't think there should be any particular "banning" going on when it comes to books. Obviously, a 5 year old should NOT be reading something heavy such as To Kill A Mockingbird or something. There can be age/maturity limits, but I think banning a book completely is useless.
To be honest, I wonder what conditions a book must have to be banned. Like... I heard of Captian Underpants being banned somewhere, and Harry Potter has been banned too, but under what extreme reasons should a book be banned? And who decides such a thing? o_O

Very christian people would choose to ban books worshiping satan. I mean if you go and show a christian a book that tells you to sacrifice your soul to eternally obey the dark master then what do you think the reaction would be? People pretend to be against banning but when it comes down to it their words are just trash. I'd rather be real than let myself fall to hypocritism as I always do.

Stephie...could a five year old even chew its way through To Kill a Mockingbird? I'll admit, I had a hard time getting through some parts...but I understand and agree with what you're saying.
| QUOTE (GalesOfall) | | I'd rather be real than let myself fall to hypocritism as I always do. |
wait...what? you would rather be real than let yourself fall to hypocriticism as you ALWAYS do? you ALWAYS fall to hypocritisim? what? ...that's a bit of a contradicting statement there... what you said about christians is a broad generalization. I do not believe that a true christian would do such. Although not happy with it, and I'm sure they would speak against it, God gave us free will for a reason. we do have freedom of choice.
| QUOTE (stephieskool) | | I wonder what conditions a book must have to be banned |
I tend to wonder that myself. the next thing I wonder, is where do we draw the line? How can we ban one book and not ban every book? we can't. we can't ban The Golden Compass without banning all books of that type. same goes for harry potter. or anything really.

Galesoffall- It doesn't make you a hypocrite just because you support or are against something.
I think when it comes down to it. We should have a bit of control over what the young ones read (and I mean young) but once we reach a certain age, we begin to learn that the world isn't just a little perfect bubble of love. From the news and other forms of media we learn what the world really has in store for us. So should we ban all forms of media? My point is that if we don't hear it from To Kill a Mockingbird (Just an example), we will hear it from another form of media so what is the point of banning a book like To Kill A Mockingbird? It is just certain states that still have a blood-lust for the black community who don't want people to get the message of anti-racism that this book is trying to send. Now I know we live in Canada but this topic is clearly leaning towards certain states who are banning this book. So I would like to know if that is breaking the first amendment which I will cite from "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." They officially break that amendment the moment they ban a book. So why don't they just burn all of their important documents and start all over so they can do whatever they please! If they break one of the rules why do they even have them? OK well there is my little rant. I had a bad day today and that blew off a lot of steam that was bottled up. I'm so glad for this topic.

GalesOfall- I'm Christian and I wouldn't ban a satanist book. Like... obviously there would have to be rules on it because someone might bring it into a Catholic school to read and that would obviously be bad. But I don't care if anyone else were to read it. I probably wouldn't read it myself, mostly for the reason of its stupidity not religion, but I wouldn't completely ban it. Put regulations and limits on it, but not a ban because that would be pointless. I know some Catholic schools who banned the Harry Potter series for its involvement with magic and told the students to not read it, but that didn't stop anyone from reading it outside of school.

Ultimatly Im not for banning books for a number of reasons. Now whether or not a school child can read through how to kill a mockingbird I dont really think its relavent. If this hypothetical child can read through it then he/she should have the right to do so. I think that kids should have the right to read whatever they please without adults telling them differently. I dont really think its fair to decide what and what not kids can read.

Yeah, I'm a heavy hypocrite. Like I tell someone not to eat so much and then I eat alot. So if I say they shouldn't ban books I'm gonna probably find an occasion where I go, that book should be banned! But then again everyone is a hypocrite at one time. I mean you can happily argue like this now but if someone robbed you using a book that tells them how I don't think you can continue to pretend. Not that it would actually happen because those books are banned. Or more likely unpublished. Too bad...
Personnally I don't want books to be banned but for the greater good I think that it's necessary. If banning has already occured then obviously there was some sort of discussion leading to banning as the option. And lets face it, the people who actually get to choose are much smarter than us.

GalesOfall: what is the greater good though? your idea of greater good will probably differ from my idea of greater good, or a politicians idea of greater good. Everything is realitive. and the problem isn't WHO'S choosing what books to ban, it's that they're banning them. We have freedom of speech. by banning books, they're taking that away from us, and that's what's wrong.

Then I'm gonna flip the chessboard on you.Since it's all realitive, what you think is wrong is different from other peoples' ideas of wrong. See? It's not hard to be a hypocrite. It wouldn't be as hypocritical if you said at the end, it was just your idea of wrong. Then you can follow your statement and give your opinion.
