yeah, this might not be as important as other issues like child abuse and stuff, but i was just wondering, should the govenrment and skools have the right to ban books?

I know some books don't teach good morals or they oppose the government of whatever, but they still shouldn't be banned, should they? I mean, writing books is a way to express ones thoughts and feelings. The government shouldn't have the power to take keep away these thoughts even if the government doesn't agree with the author. Like, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It's banned in some states. Yeah, i've read it, and i know it talks about racism and uses some racist terms and whatnot, but it teaches good morals, nevertheless.

But, I also understand that books are very powerful and influential. So, I guess I can see why the government would want certain books banned.

However, I still firmly belive that books should not be banned. After all, we do have freedom of speech, right?

Hey Hey,

I dont think that books should be banned.....why would they do someting like that. its like banning harry potter because it has witchcraft in it,

im not sure if you know about Michal Moore, but he is a great guy (i think) he made a movie called 9/11 Fahrenheit and it talks about how Bush knew about 9/11 before hand, and had ties with bin ladin...wutever....anways....no movie company like disney or warner brothers or wutever, would not play it, just to keep it quiet and so the public doesnt know wuts really goin on....that isnt fair (by the way, a company has agreed to show it, and it will be released on June 25th), it just like banning books, we have the right to read what we want, and if it is bad, or unapproprite, at leaest we will know about it. You see if they ban books, then out of human nature we will WANT to read it.

Banning of books should be selective, like banning books from schools or a library.

outright banning of a book to the general public is what shouldn't happen.
(i've read To Kill a Mockingbird too, and i read it for school as part of an assignment)

I've read To Kill A Mockingbird and the whole time I was I was looking for what people found so offensive, I found nothing. I do agree some books should be banned however, there is a lot of dangerous information out there. And I'm just wondering, should that movie be Farenheit 9/11? Because there is a book that was or maybe still is banned called Farenheit 451, I think the book was actually about illegal books, and people who had the jobs of burning these books. Apparently it supported book burning or something, I need to read it. I've read To Kill A Mockingbird and the whole time I was I was looking for what people found so offensive, I found nothing. Farenheit 451 wasn't supporting book burning (it would be hypocritical! being a book and all...)

but it did discuss how the would would be like with heavy censorship and all, kind of appropriate for this topic.

When I said 'Apparently it supported book burning' I was being sarcastic, that's why people wanted it banned, or at least some people, I haven't read much into it.

LOL! I can't belive that none of you see the irony of this discussion! You're all speaking out against censorship towards the general public but ALL YOUR MESSAGES were just subjected to censorship the second you clicked "submit"! Someone just decided if this very message is "APPROPRIATE" or not! By the way moderators, if you cancel this message, you'll be exactly the type of people we are against! They'll always be censorship and some of it is good (like banning adult shows until nightime), What do ya think of that! :P LOL! I can't belive that none of you see the irony of this discussion! I only have 1 thing to say to 1 person - AngrySamurai

You do know that YTV is a website that also has YOUNGER readers, don't you?

What they do is waht parents do to their kids - make sure that everything they do is okay for their age.

That's why I think that book banning and burning is so wrong! If a child gets their hand on a book that isn't right for their age group, their parents will take it away.

SO, once you are old enough to think on your own, you will be able to see that very thing your parents took away from you.

It's only a matter of time befor you read the book, so why does the government try so hard to keep you from reading it?

Its not fair they can't do that we have the right to read and read what we want and if they want to ban it then why read at all. true so true, at my school they don't let us read steven king novels cause its too adult and they ban it. Banning books? Way wrong! If popular book series like Harry Potter get banned, how can we have fun? How can we learn new stuff? How can we use our imaginations? If books got banned, authors would write more books, but nobody could read them because they got banned! Banning books? Way wrong! yah... Atticus is great. He's a real hero and i'll forever admire what he did. ^.^

but... some things are kinda inappropriate and kids shouldn't read it. Like, some vocab, or ideas really shouldn't be put in a kid's mind. But i guess if they're mature and stuff, they should have the freedom to read whatever.

i just really don't get it. Why must they ban such great works of literature?!?

Whoa, TKAM is banned in some states? That's so stupid. What do they expect from a book that was written in the 1940s and is going around racism, if any better, the book was against racism, I loved Atticus, he was freakin awesome. That's really stupid to ban a great bit of literature, that's not even that bad. And it's even funnier that some Christian groups i heard banned Harry Potter books just because it's about magic or whatever. I don't think that books should be banned for inappropriate language, just so as long as they take precautions so that lil kids won't come across them. But I don't think that school libraries should have anyting too inappropriate either, i mean, it's a school! But yeah, i don't think they should ban books for stupid reason or inappropriate language, just so as long as they know what they mean and won't use it around the school, but there shouldn't be anything too inappropriate.
