The sun was warm on Rose's face, and she imagined what she must look like to a passer by. Her dress was plain and blue, and her high-top sneakers must have looked out of place with it, but she didn't care. She was happy, and that's all that mattered. She blew a piece of long black hair out of her eyes and just let the sun sink in. Today was a good day, a good, good, good day... She sang to herself, enjoy the noise that she could make, until-
"Wake up! You'll be late for school!" Her mothers voice snapped her to reality. Rose jumped out of bed and pushed her glasses onto her face. She looked at her mother, who was wearing a ridiculous pink bathrobe with matching slippers. Her blonde hair was in curlers, and she was frantically rushing from room to room. trying to find who-knows-what.
She paused for a minute to smile at her daughter. "Hey, rose. Did you get a good sleep?" Rose just nodded and smiled, but her mother didn't mind. It wasn't as if Rose was too lazy to speak or too disrespectful, she just wasn't capable of it. Rose, you see, had been mute since birth. She had never spoken a word. Even her breathing was silent. She had tried to learn sign language, but it just confused her. At least she wasn't deaf too. She couldn't have lived with that.
She watched as her mother continued her frantic search, and then slipped out of bed and got dressed quietly. She grabbed a piece of toast and was almost out the door. She turned to wave to her mother, but she was watching T.V. Rose sighed silently and slipped out the door.
She waited at the bus with another boy from her neighborhood. He didn't even bother waving or smiling at her when she sat down beside him. In fact, he didn't seem to notice her at all.
The bus came and they both got on. The boy emidiatly sat with one of his friends, and Rose sat down in the from, closest to the driver. She hugged her backpack against her chest and wished she was still dreaming.
The school day passed. Nothing new. Thankfully, no one asked her any questions. They just let her be. She was thankful for that.
Then, it happened.
Nothing in her life could have prepared her for this. It was so unexpected, so sudden, that she didn't quite know what happened. One minute she was walking down the hall, the next she was on the floor with a painful red mark on her face.
What seemed like the entire school looked down at her. One boy offered her a hand up, which she accepted gratefully. She muttered a thank-you and wished to be anywhere but there.
"Hey, I thought you were mute?" Said the boy. Rose recognized him a the person who had ignored her that morning while waiting for the bus.
"I am," She said. Then she clapped her hands over her mouth. What was happening?!
"Uh, sure," Said the boy.
"I c-can talk! I can t-talk! S-something must have h-hapened when I f-fell!" Suddenly, it struck her as odd that she knew how to speak. She must have picked it up without realizing, all those years of people talking to her.
The boy stared at her, unsure if she was telling the truth. "Well, good for you." The other people in the hall muttered something of the like and walked off, leaving Rose alone.
She had never been so happy in all her life.
She skipped outside onto the front of the building, enjoying being alive for the first time she could remember. She threw herself onto the grass and smiled.
