You can't really blame the Canucks, cause either way there was going to be a riot anyways.
Why are some posters here even suggesting that Vancouver will lose their hockey team? Biggest disgrace in Hockey history? Now I think said posters are exaggerating what happenned. Making things look worse then they already are?
Yes. This was the work of fans. I was in downtown watching the game, lucky for me, my good friend convinced my and my buddies to leave the downtown core a couple minutes before the game ended. We heard chants of "Riot! Riot!", when the game wasn't even close to ending!
In my opinion, I blame the VPD and mayor Gregor Robertson for this embarrassment. I don't blame the people on the front lines, the riot cops, those out on the street risking their life, but I blame the police chief for his poor "plan". I especially blame the mayor for this poor response "plan". They said that there was a "plan" in case there were to be a riot, but this "plan" completely failed. Had an actual "plan" been devised, the riot would have been alot less destructive.
Planned by an anarchist group? The riot was started by a bunch of drunk, angry, testesterone driven fans! There was arounn 100,000 people in downtown, and just thinking that a group of 100 anarchists would be able to convince the other 99,900 people to start a riot is ridiculous. People at my highschool were talking about a riot happenning days before Game 7. If highschoolers could catch on, how could the mayor, police chief, and premier not notice?
So long story short, what caused the riot? Stupidity

Quite close to. The only worse thing I can think of related to the fans was the Richard Riot. Fan-based hockey event wise, the three worst events I know of are the Richard Riot, the 2011 Canucks Riot, and the 1994 Canucks Riot.

Your mayor is a goof. He's admitted he never read the report. Police were ill-equipped for the situation. The VPD were given their marching orders and nothing else could be done.

Problem is, stupidity doesn't explain it all. It happened in 1994 and it happened in 2011. Outside of Montreal and Vancouver, there hasn't been a major hockey riot. I believe it is partly to do with the city and fans themselves...in other words, the fans themselves aren't great. You can't convince me that there were no anarchists in Calgary (2004) or Edmonton (2006) during their game 7 losses. Yet none of them had major problems. Writers even go out of their way to applaud that fact and point out that between them there "might have been one broken pane of glass". This leaves the single major variable to be the city/fans.

These happen because people do not know how to control their feelings when they don't get what they want. This is why they act in rebellious ways.
