Chapter Five- Combat Zones (Continued)

"What are the latest developments, sir?" David asked in the briefing room.

The lieutenant-general gave out a harsh sigh before he spoke. "The Easterners are starting to move up past the border and into West Ontario."

A brief pause immediately followed with tense silence, before the lieutenant-general spoke again.

"There was word from the top general that about 14 hours ago, the cities and towns of Timmins, Iroquois Falls, Heron Bay, and others were swarmed and overran by East-Canadian troops." He explained. "We do not know the extant of the casualties over at these towns, but we believe that the Easterners will continue to advance their way further up West Ontario."

"And if we do not intervene in time, sir?" The captain asked.

Another moment of tense silence.

"...We lose West Ontario to them." The lieutenant-general responded. "There would be a huge setback to our operations."

"This is the reason why you called me to here, lieutenant?" David asked him.

"That's correct, Captain Theraultson." He replied. "At 0800 hours, you will be stationed at Forward Operations Base Thunder Bay, along with the 125th L.F. Infantry."

"There, you will take part in Operation Rollback, fending off the reported invasive OpFor in the cities of Coldwell and Hillsport. I assure your squad and yourself will repel them off." He told David.

"Yes, sir." David responded to him. "For the true, democratic nation."

The lieutenant-general smiled thinly as the captain left the room.

Chapter Five- Combat Zones (Continued)

Several hours later into the next day...

An olive-and-dark green military transport aircraft had touched down on the tarmac at the airfield of the Thunder Bay forward operations base. Captain David Theraultson stepped out of the aircraft, in front of a convoy of five jeeps manned by West-CAN military officers. One officer assisted David by opening the rear passenger door for him as he climbed in. The door was closed as the convoy of jeeps began to drive off to the main buildings of the operations base. As soon as David entered the room where the squad was in, one of the generals had met him.

"Alright, men. This here's Captain Theraultson, and he will be with all of you for the combat operations in Coldwell and Hillsport." The general introduced him.

Most of the 125th Land Forces Infantry were composed of soldiers in the Private ranking, and some were either Sergeants or Corporals. David took his time to look around the group of men to remember their faces and the expressions that they made. He had been in countless combat roles for 10 years with the West Canadian forces, but David had known how it feels to be in those situations.

"In about five hours, you will all be transported via helicopter to the two LZs." The general went on. "From there, your objectives will be to: prevent any civilian casualties, repel and neutralize enemy lines, and secure both towns. You're the finest squad ever to face all of this in your finest hour, now let's hear from you all so that you know what you're going to do!"

"HOO-AH!" All of the squad members gave out a mighty yell.

"That's what I'm talking about." The general said as he left the room.

Five hours later, the helicopter blades began to spin as the soldiers climbed into the aircrafts at the airfield. Captain Theraultson boarded the final chopper with eight other men.

Chapter Five- Combat Zones (Continued)

The dark-and-olive green helicopters took off from their landing pads, into the dark, morning skies. As David looked out the window from the right side of the aircraft, he saw the heavily dense trees from above passing by his eyes. He then turned to his squadmates.

"So, how long have you been serving for, Sergeant?" David asked one of the squad members sitting across from him.

"Six years." The sergeant, who was known as Sgt. Jacobs by the stitching of his combat uniform, replied.

"Alright." David said quietly. "Any one of you PFCs here came from school?"

"I am, sir." The soldier sitting next to Sgt. Jacobs hesitantly spoke. "I graduated from Abbottsford a year and a half ago."

"Okay, do you have any plans for the future after this?" David calmly asked him.

"Well, I'm, uh, engaged to my beautiful fiancee right now, and I promised her after the war that I would marry her."

David asked after a brief pause. "Private, what's your name?"

"Clarkson. Ken Clarkson."

"Private Clarkson...it's a nice time to talk to you." The Captain said to him.

An hour passed by, as the fleet of helicopters neared their first destination, which was Coldwell. However, the choppers were met with heavy rocket fire from the ground before they would find their landing zones. One of the rockets fired from the ground had slammed into the tail of Theraultson's helicopter, causing it to catch flames at the back. The captain and his squad of eight held on for dear life as the pilots attempted a crash landing into an open field.

Chapter Five- Combat Zones (Continued)

The dead, intense silence grew as the remains of the crashed chopper had been illuminated by the orange glow of the fires spreading around it. However, the silence was broken as sounds came out from the main part of downed helicopter. The mangled metallic scrap that was the boarding door of the aircraft had been shifted open by Captain Theraultson, as he made it out with rifle and sidearm equipped. The rest of the soldiers in his squad had followed him one-by-one; some had sustained minor injuries from the crash landing, some with scratches, and the other few had been unscathed by the wreck. The squad moved out several yards away from the burning wreckage, as David got on the radio communications.

"This is Captain Theraultson of the 125th L.F. Infantary. Our air transport got struck down by rocket fire, presumably from the ground! Right now, all my men are with me--except for two casualties, the pilots."

There was a response that came shortly from another squad in the combat operation.

"Copy that. Thank goodness you guys are safe! Right now we have touched down and are progressing some kilometres towards the hot zone. Continue your way, Captain! This is Squad Two, over and out!"

"Solid copy." Theraultson responded.

The captain of the squad then gave out an "Oscar Mike" handsignal before he began to move, with the rest of his squad following. They slowly stepped through the thick and dense forest areas, and had watched each other's backs as they trudged through the surroudings of tall trees. As the minutes pass on by, they made their way towards the area closer to the main operations point of the town. Before they stepped anymore further, a quiet but distinct sound was made some metres ahead of the squad. Captain Theraultson had ordered his squad to halt, before they began to hide behind conviently-placed bushes and shrubs.

The captain of the squad then ordered his men to be very quiet in his calm, but quiet voice.

"I hear something...might be a patrol ahead."
