Just warning you for spoilers since we aren't this far in the dub yet.
Naruto Shippuden is otherwise known as Naruto the Hurricane Chronicles. It's based on part 2 in the manga starting from chapter 245 and we're currently at chapter 382 (for this week Thursday). The last chapter of part 1 in the manga ends at 238, then 239-244 is the Kakashi Gaiden. Which unfortunately has never been animated. The last episode based on part 1 sort of ends at 135.
After that, the anime team just did a whole series of fillers, not relating to the manga story at all, as they were catching up to the manga too fast. So by letting the manga get far ahead in the storyline, they came up with fillers that hopefully won't conflict with anything later on in the main storyline. Alot of things were just whacked out storylines, and characters going out of character. From what I understand, the company suffered the lowest of viewing rates during the fillers.
If you're curious how many filler episodes us sub watchers suffered through, it's from episode 136-220. It can be said that the 2nd half of episode 220 is in relation to the ending of part 1 in chapter 238. There's rumors that in the English dub, they will either A)Skip all the fillers and go straight to Shippuden. B)Show certain fillers that have some story connectivity then go to Shippuden. C) Show all fillers and then Shippuden just like the Japanese version.

Also to add on to your question about characters growing up. Again spoilers so read at your own transgression.
At the end of episode 135/220 (ignoring the fillers), or chapter 238 in the manga, 2 1/2 years will pass by in the storyline. So at the beginning of episode 221 (or Shippuden episode 1 this becomes) and chapter 245, the characters are 2 1/2 years older. There are reasons why for this long timeskip in the storyline. We're nearing it soon, as I think we're currently around episode 115+ or so in the dub, with Neji currently fighting Kidoumaru of the Sound 4.

Shippuden takes place two and a half years after Naruto and everyone is a chunin or higher except Naruto because he was off training with Jiraiya. The focus is more on Akatsuki being the bad guys instead of Orochimaru.
Who has seen episode 39?
Spoiler:
I first thought the spy was Kakashi becasue he was late but it ended up being Kabuto.

Yeah, I really wanted Kakashi Gaiden to be animated. Anime only watchers are missing out on the story on young Kakashi and how he grew to become who he is today. Especially his ideal on that not following the rules are scum, but those who neglect their friends are worse than scum. Also shows a reason into why he's usually late and such. Kakashi Gaiden animated would've been so much better than some of the bad filler storylines we had to suffer through /sigh.

Yep, how he got the sharingan as well. Kakashi's team is sorta like a mirror image of team 7, led by Namikaze Minato (Yondaime). Kakashi is similar to Sasuke (serious about being a ninja), Rin is similar to Sakura (has a crush on Kakashi), and Obito is similar to Naruto (has a crush on Rin, and is loud, boisterous, and a rival to Kakashi).
Since not everyone knows, it should be noted that Obito is an Uchiha and is from whom that Kakashi gets the sharingan after dying. Hmm, Kid999, I assume you only watch the anime and haven't read the manga? I can tell you what happens next, but if you don't want to be spoiled, then I won't say anything.
