Wii - the two "ii"s represent the controller setup (the nunchuck controller) and two people playing together. The name, wii is pronounced "we" which basically symbolizes that the wii is meant for everyone. Wii isnt a short form or anything. Its a new word. A nintendo word.

the W.. i dont no where that came from. But the two i's are supposed to represent the controller... and ppl. cuz apparently i's look like humans... cuz we all have floating heads.

They should of called it the Nii. Its also a new word, means the same thing, and it has an N (nintendo).

Yes jaykirby, we could been the knights who say "Nii"! (quoted from Monty Python and the Holy Grail). That would have been funny indeed. Big Grin Yes jaykirby, we could been the knights who say "Nii"! (quoted from Monty Python and the Holy Grail). That would have been funny indeed. Big Grin

WILL ANYONE GET THIS RIGHT?

Wii is a Japanese word meaning third place or third person. This is relating to how Nintendo games are played in the 3rd person view. America wanted to call it the Revolution but Japan was tired of American names so they made their own.

Donkeydude>>>um...no...I'm pretty sure that there's no such Japanese word called "wii". As far as I know, there are no Japanese words that even begin with W and then I. (don't know about slang)
Why would they call it "wii" if it were third person anyway? Not all of the wiis games are in third person. ie. Red Steel and Metroid.
And one last thing, America didn't want to call it "revolution". "Revolution" was their project name for the wii...

QUOTE (official wii site)
Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
