Okay, I've kind of been watching this thread for a while now, so I will say this;
belami - First off, you directly claimed that you hadn't heard of Owl City before he was mainstream. So likely you haven't heard anything except for "Fireflies". You're comparing it to "Such Great Heights" which may have a very slight synth line, yet they're absolutely nothing alike. That's like saying every single electronic artist out there has copied each other. So apparently The Postal Service ripped-off The Shins (who formed in 1997). But I don't see you complaining that TPS copied them.
We live in a decade at which point literally everything's been done before. When a project like Owl City is created that is different from mainstream, there's always going to be someone that's going to push others' beliefs by constantly trying (and failing) to prove that they sound like someone else, even if they sound absolutely nothing alike.
I'm actually quite offended by these comparisons for somewhat personal reasons. I did in fact used to be a TPS fan (hence I WOULD see any similarities; if there were any). While I was a fan, I was going through a state of depression that TPS only fueled. In 2007 I found Owl City which then saved me from that same depression. Owl City and TPS' music contain COMPLETELY different meanings. Owl City's music conveys a sense of optimism and positivity while TPS' music conveys they exact opposite.

First off all, I don't care what you say, I am proud of my fandom-ness, it is no way embarrsing. so don't tell me that I'm being a bad fan because of that, kay?

Kay, if you listened to ethier of them in depth, you'd clearly realize that the two sound nothing alike, since you're not a fan of ethier, you wouldn't be able to make out the differences easily. They may both be artists of the same genre, but they're not alike.

Kay, look. I'm sure Adam would've given those answers to get the reporter people to stop annoying him with TPS related questions. Whoever came up with that comparrsion is so wrong, TPS doesn't use synth as much in their songs, when with Owl City, the synth is used a lot.

It appears to me that you haven't heard any other Owl City songs other than Fireflies, I'd like to point out that you can't judge an artist from only hearing one song, and from what the press has said.

Also, I'd like to let you know that there are a few indie artists/bands that I listen to who only have a few hundred fans. These unknown artists really like having fans who strongly support them, these fans help them get noticed, and that's very important to them, and having strong fans means alot to any artist, because these fans are legit, and will still support an artist no matter what, anyone would like having a fan like that.

*sigh* *facepalm*
Okay, let me reword that. What I clearly meant was, the mainstream had not heard of him prior to Ocean Eyes and the release of "Fireflies". So most people, other than his early fans, have NOT heard of him before that, myself included. I listen to quite a few indie artists, so I'm used to nobody having heard of my favourite artists (other than the very obviously established fanbase), and there is no need to get offended by that, jeez. The more well known an artist gets, the more criticism they will draw because they are reaching a wider audience. The comments started 2 years later, because that's when everybody and their mom finally heard the blasted song (as opposed to just the fans.)

Fine, I'm not going to bother to argue over the similarities because you obviously aren't going to have any of it and/or ignore whatever argument I have to say. However even Adam admits he can see the similarity:

QUOTE

It’s kind of ironic, looking back at it, because a lot of people do relate the two projects. I can totally see it now, but I didn’t really then, for what it’s worth.

QUOTE

I think [Give Up] left everyone asking, “What are they going to do next?” Since no one has done anything quite like it, it’s almost like everyone is naturally saying this is the next step — maybe that’s me, maybe that’s this record."

You might not realise this, by your fanaticism is very off putting towards Owl City. I am saying this as someone who has definitely been there and done it at your age (for other artists obviously). Over zealous fans are very often a source of embarrassment for the sensible ones and the artists themselves. If the vocal fanbase is annoying, then people on the receiving end will associate that negative feeling with their the artist and could end up hating by association. This applies to all fanbases and fandoms.

Belami - FIRST OFF ALL do not say "hardly anyone has heard of him" because he had quite a fan base before realesing Ocean Eyes last summer. So plently of people knew of him before.
Also, Death Cab isn't tps. Might be the same dude, but there are so many differcnes between the two bands. Just because Adam's friends would've listened to tps doesn't mean he would've. I've listened to music with my friends that I wouldn't listen to otherwise, artists such as Kesha So, yeah, people can sometimes listen to music with their friends that they don't really like/listen to.
Okay, for the Such Great Heights song, comparing it to Fireflies, they sound NOTHING alike, at all. The sounds, synth parts, are completly different. Please, you're so wrong.
"you can't deny that he is heavily influenced by Gibbard's work." Um, yeah you can. Because, he's not, at all. He even said so in this group chat on the fansite last may.

And, Yes, I am a very huge hard-core Adam Young fan, thank you very much.

Lol Kat31, are you a huge Adam Young/Owl City fan by any chance? Personally I can't stand his music, it fills me with irrational rage, but please... the accusations started 2 years after the formation because IT TOOK HIM 2 YEARS TO GET MAINSTREAM. Nobody accused him when he first came out because hardly anybody had heard of him. Listen to "Such Great Heights" by Postal Service and tell me "Fireflies" doesn't sound the least bit similar....

As for Adam not listening to the Postal Service... well he has admitted to being more of a Death Cab fan (which is also by Ben Gibbard, dun dun dun) and "I had some friends in high school that would have it [Postal Service] playing in their cars and stuff." So yeah, even if he didn't "rip off" you can't deny that he is heavily influenced by Gibbard's work.

QUOTE

Anyone who says he does is wrong, and that's not just my opoion, it's fact.

No, it is an opinion. Just as you think they sound nothing alike, some people think they sound exactly the same. Either you accept it and move one/keep enjoying your music or you can stay in denial all you want, blinded by your love. Trust me, I've been there and now overzealous fans just annoy me. Also, for the record, I'm not even a Postal Service or Death Cab fan :/

Sorry... I felt the need to do this...

Belami - Adam Young DID NOT rip off the postal service, all those accousations stared TWO YEARS AFTER he started Owl City. So some noob said that without knowing anything. AND Adam's music is extremly different than the postal services', theirs (or whatever) is depressing/sad music. Owl City's music is much more happy and optimistic (and way better) ALSO Adam Young doesn't even listen to the postal service, you cannot rip off a band that you don't listen to. Basicly, he did not rip off the postal service. Anyone who says he does is wrong, and that's not just my opoion, it's fact.

Eh, I listened to their album a bit and a mistook a few of their tracks for tolerable Animal Collective songs (not that that's saying much since I can't get past the 30 second mark of any song off Merriweather Post Pavilion, ugh). They are an electronic indie pop act so they usually tend to sound all sparkly and whimsy. They aren't really my style so I don't know what else to tell you. Similar artists include Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Phoenix, Postal Service (aka the band Adam Young/Owl City ripped off), etc.
